Terel, this is good news from what I can tell. And, frankly, these days, we could all use some good news. Thanks for a thought-provoking article. And thank you, also, for suffering through a lot of reading through the government documents, which are not even close to being pleasant to read, and squashing it down into plain English for the masses. I think there are always ways for music therapists to go about providing services, we just have to keep our eyes and ears open.

I think the idea of allowing Dan to smash the clay into tiny pieces is beneficial,I think that using the hammer, saw , nails and some wood to create a new form out of the same negative emotions can be more cathartic. Dan will have created a new image out of his negative or angry feelings.Smashing something into pulp does relieve tension however, having him create something new out of the same anxious energy might be another possibility to try.

I love your story. It is such a natural instinctual thing to do with children and it works beautifully. I was working in a preschool when a child got injured and we were waiting for the parent to come and take the child home. The child was inconsolable and staff were at a loss. I instinctually picked up the child, rocked him and hummed a soothing melody. This held him in a safe , nurturing place till his mother arrived. It is so easy for adults to forget the magic of movement and music.
Thanks for sharing, Elizabeth, Dance/movement therapist

How inspiring. What a safe place you have made for this child to express himself and create spaces/items of comfort and strength. The fact that you are his "secret holder" says it all. He feels you know and will address his needs. Is there anything more precious? Thank you for your creative work to assist this child.

Thanks Roia! I'll certainly keep you all posted. So far I've seen Billy twice. In the first session he learned London Bridge using colored music for Boomwhackers on the Boomwhackers. He was able to sing every pitch in tune and instantly translated the notes to the piano! His parents report that he is constantly singing at home: making up his own songs and beginning to chant his communications to his parents.
